The NSWPRL State representative squad, had a quick shower and drive to ANZ Stadium after their annual interstate clash, with their Queensland counterparts. Twenty of the squad formed an honour guard to mark the 150 years of NSW Policing celebrations, as the NSW and Queensland teams ran onto ANZ. All of those who took part in the honour guard loved that moment, which they will cherish for life.

1990 was a significant year for the NSWPRL.  Tireless workers, President Alex Ramsey, Secretary and Treasurer, Doug Keen and Terry Cameron had worked for years to organise the first NSWPRL tour of England.  Players and supporters enjoyed the three week tour which coincided with the Australian Kangaroo tour.  The photograph below is at the traditional 'Headingley' Stadium, home of Leeds RLFC.  The touring party had witnessed the Australian Kangaroos defeat Leeds.

Police Teams, Results, 1963
The 1963 game against the 21 Division and the Vice Squad. Both of these sections were squads within the CIB. The two teams played annually for the 'Steve Duff' Memorial Trophey, which had been donated by the then boss of 21 Division, Detective Inspector 'Snowy' Whiteman. On this occasion the game was played on a 'rock hard' surface at Erskineville Oval on 23/7/1963. This game was very Prestigious within the NSW Police Force during this era, and a large crowd will flock to this annaul event.

The notes indicate that the referee was a first grade ref by the name of Harry Griffin and that the Vice squad team had two first grade players, Bob Keyes and Terry Matthews.21 Division ran out winners on this occasion by 24 points to 10.

Names such as 'Dinga' Bell and 'Dick Baker' (21 Division) were involved in Police rugby league for many years to come, and Dick Baker became President in the late 1980's for a number of years.  'Dinga' retired to Tweed Heads, and would come to any Police game played on the Gold Coast. He was a fantastic bloke who was highly thought of by all of those involved in Police rugby league, who knes him. Sadly, Dinga passed away in 2011.

In the team photograph below, Dinga can be seen directly to the right of the referee Harry Griffin, and Dick Baker is next to him. Nelson Chad (second left) from the referee, bacame a highly decorated Police Officer and received a Commissioners Commendation in 1979.

In the photograph below, Nelson Chad is seen passing the ball to a flying Bob Keyes. Bob was an East junior who signed with the Newtown Bluebags. Bob partnered another police officer Brian 'Chica' Moore in the centres. He played for NSW in 1964 and went to captain Newtown.

Police Teams, NSW Players, Teams, 1930

The larger photo was taken in July 1930.  It was taken prior to the police V fire brigade match.  My father is in the front row—2nd from left—and the same Wal Maisey is in the back row, 2nd from left.  Dad told me that Ron Waldron who later became Commissioner, is in the photo.  I am not sure, but I seem to think that he is in the back row, 3rd from the left.  Maybe you have access to some old photos of Commissioners past which will help you identify him.

The jumper was blue with a white V.  Pity I did not have Dad write the names on the back of the photo while he was still with us.  Hope these photos are of some use.

INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY RON WEBER

My father told me, when I was a young boy, that the police played rugby union in a mid-week competition with other public service branches.  My father, Ben Weber, played rugby league on the weekends with Balmain.

The small photo was taken at Bombala in 1929, which is the year after Dad joined the force.  He is 4th from the left in the back row.  On his left is Wal Maisey (not sure about the spelling).  I can just remember Wal coming to our house in Drummoyne and I seem to remember Dad telling me that Wal rode motor bikes.
