The Maroubra team has been in the Police competition since 1969, but the combined with the Waverley Police District in 1983 resulting in a more competitive team.In 1990, under the coaching of Bob Frost and containing Damien Beaufils and Brad Kirkwood, stalwarts from 1983, the 'Wombats' as they were nick-named, needed to win the last eleven games to make the grand final.
The sudden death semi final against a spirited Penrith outfit, looked like for the majority of the game, that the Wombats would struggle to make the GF.
Down 8-0 with ten minutes to go, the game looked over for the wombats until a brilliant backline move saw centre Mark Delaney score a try. Keith Baird converted and the score was now 8-6 to Penrith, but the wombats could smell a chance to topple the Panthers.
With minutes remaining, Penrith who had possession made a crucial error. The wombats capitalised and after a sizzling run by centre, Keith Baird who split the defence and passed to his centre partner Mark Delaney, Delaney drew in the defence and passed to winger John Parker who scored a try inches from the sideline. Keith Baird converted and the Wombats won the game 12-8 and qualified for another GF. New players John Alt, Stephen Giles, Shane Hulands, Shane Horsborogh and Tim Mowle complemented the more experienced players. Information Dick Baker-President-1990.
